As of Yet making ground

It looked like As of Yet's talent might stay hidden.

The band formed in spring of 1995, when all four future members happened to reside on the third floor of Boyd Hall.Drummer Neal Fitch, guitarist Kristian Klaene and singer/ guitarist Scott Arrington, who had known each other for a while, decided that spring that it was time to start a band. The group wrote a few songs and scheduled a show on North Campus despite its lack of a bass player.

The band quickly recruited bassist Andy Leathers, who then had to learn the whole set in a matter of two weeks.

The show went fine, and the members were looking forward to their first club show at the Wroklage in WRFL's Hidden Talent Show.

Unfortunately, the show was canceled, rescheduled, canceled, rescheduled and canceled again.

Despite this initial setback, As of Yet finally started to gain momentum the following fall with a show on the Student Center lawn.

Soon after, the musicians recorded their first demo in Fitch's bedroom, using rented equipment.

WRFL gave As of Yet's songs some airplay, which pleased the band members.

"It's quite a thrill to hear yourself on the radio," Fitch said.

The musicians cite an array of influences ranging from classic rock to jazz; Led Zeppelin comes up frequently.

Fitch, an economics senior, and Leathers, a chemical engineering junior, say that while much of the band's music could be considered "straight-ahead rock," the group tries to avoid getting stuck in a four-chord rut. It fuses subtle guitar intricacies with dynamic rhythms.

As of Yet hopes to attract new fans and satisfy old ones with an upcoming album, Leave Bronx, which was recorded last summer. Like the first demo, this album was produced at home.

This time, however, the band used better equipment and invested substantially more effort.

Leave Bronx should be available at the end of October at the band's shows and in local music stores.

Members of As of Yet say that while their main focus is playing music, they like having fun.

They would like to take the band as far as it can go, but for now, its plan of attack is simple:

"We need to get heard," Leathers said.

As of Yet will perform once again as a part of SAB's concert series tomorrow at noon on the Student Center lawn.
